The Journal Project

The Journal Project.

Its mission is simple: to celebrate, inspire and encourage the practice of journaling.

I think people would be surprised to know most of us already keep a journal in some form or another. I suppose I define journaling more loosely than some but I consider even a check register a record of sorts.

This project has been the passion of my heart for years and the ideas are still forming, but the pull in my heart to get it started has been stronger these days. I found this article by my favorite author this morning and consider it permission to simply begin where I'm at. Reading Anne Lamott's article
on finding time in April's issue of Sunset reminded me I had to make my own time and stop waiting for ideal circumstances to go in the direction I am called.

Welcome to The Journal Project.

Q: What's with the name?
A: It came to me this morning. Simple. To the point. Also, if I waited for the perfect name to come along ... I'd never begin.

Q: How long have you been keeping a journal?
A: For as long as I can remember. My first one was purple with a unicorn and rainbow on the cover. I started my entries with a date and the classic "Dear Diary" salutation.

Q: How often do you write in your journal?
A: I write something in at least one of my journals nearly every day, but that is by no means the only way to do it. It's just that when I find myself gearing into Crazytown I can almost always get myself back on track by checking in on paper.

Q: So how many journals do you have?
A: I don't know, exactly. I have my primary journal, my "net" for catching thoughts, notes, lists, memory triggers, things pasted in from magazines, web sites to check out ... then there's my kitchen journal for recipes, notes on disasters and dishes to tweak and try again ... I have a couple special project journals - one for each of my sons where I jot notes to them. Another special one is a journal-as-letter I mail back and forth with my friend and roommate from college. Then there's my Moleskine collection {I really am sort of a paper whore, huh?} I am faithful to my Moleskine planner and recently bought a Wellness Journal and a Recipe Journal. I plan to start those somewhere between caring for my toddler and infant, writing and packing up my house to move.

Q: That sounds like too much.
A: And that , friends, is the voice of my inner critic. {I'm making this "interview" up as I go, right? So that question came out of nowhere.} Anyway ... yeah, it might be too much for some but for me ... like I said, it keeps me sane. Then, there's my blog. I know it's not a journal exactly but has become as important to my process as my primary journal so I have to count it.

Q: What's with the made-up Q & A?
A: Practicing for Oprah.
